In a first, Bata gets an India CEO to ‘shoe the world’
MUMBAI: For the first time in Bata’s 126-year history, an Indian will lead the firm to ‘shoe the world’.
Sandeep Kataria, 49, who is currently Bata India’s CEO, has been elevated as global CEO of the company, as the current incumbent, Alexis Nasard, moves on.
Kataria is in distinguished company. Other Indians at the helm of global organisations include Satya Nadella of Microsoft, Sundar Pichai of Alphabet, Ajay Banga of Mastercard, Arvind Krishna of IBM, Laxman Narasimhan of Reckitt Benckiser, Ivan Menezes of Diageo and Vasant Narasimhan of Novartis.
Kataria takes charge as global CEO with immediate effect as Nasard, who is stepping down after almost five years in the role, is reportedly set to join Kantar. An engineer from IIT-Delhi and a gold medallist of the 1993 PGDBM batch at XLRI, Kataria has 24 years of work experience at Unilever, Yum Brands and Vodafone in India and Europe. Kataria joined Bata India as CEO in 2017.
India is the top market for the Switzerland-headquartered footwear major. Under Kataria’s leadership, Bata India doubled its profits driven by a double-digit topline growth, and ran campaigns like ‘Surprisingly Bata’, to revamp the brand’s image and project it as contemporary, targeted at younger consumers. Bata India posted a net profit of Rs 327 crore on revenues of Rs 3,053 crore in 2019-20.

135 crore and counting .. all will be indians in near future !
In the Bata shoe factory where I worked for a year, most of the top posts were occupied by Indians. This gentleman Kararia is a highly qualified person with vast experience. Hence his elevation to CEO is not surprising.

It's a feather on a cap for the Indians. so, happy to see our people embarking the positions globally and leaving inspiration to many young Indians.
At this rate, in the next 25 years we will see Indian origin as Heads of State of many countries globally...
And I was under the impression that Bata is an Indian brand
While India is producing world class CEO , Pakistan , which got independence at the same time, is busy producing world class terrorist .
Time has come to re-merge Pakistan back to India !
What a great performance by the Indians abroad, around the world. Every Indian is proud of their achievement. But we Indians in India face unchecked co ption all around in the country and need to root out the pandemic of co ption.
One one hand it is natural for us to feel proud that yet another Indian is capable enough to be appointed to lead a global multi national company. However, on the other hand we should also feel ashamed that India doesn't have enough opportunities for super talented and capable people, who are snapped up by multi nationals. So now these talented Indians are helping American and Swiss companies to make money. Sad to see the Brain Drain
is the brand popular outside India?
ALL THE BEST TO THE NEW CEO
After reaping a fortune over decades with their base in Kolkata, West Bengal, Bata moved their HQ to Gurgaon. They built a massive HQ building in Gurgaon, and eliminated hundreds of good paying jobs in Kolkata, West Bengal. As a die hard Kolkattan I am boycotting Bata. And if you care for Kolkata and West Bengal, you should too.
